What is the Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022?

Between 1953 and 1987, contaminated drinking water in the wells at Camp Lejeune put service members, their families, and civilians at risk for cancer and other serious illnesses. There have been many illnesses linked to Camp Lejeune’s water contamination including cancers, infertility, birth defects, and severe illness.

Camp Lejeune is a military Marine Corps Base Camp in North Carolinathat opened in 1942. During water testing in the 1980’s, the Marine Corps discovered a high volume of dangerous chemicals knowns as VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in the drinking water. Though the contamination was found in the 1980’s, the contamination began earlier, in approximatley1953 — running over four decades.

The U.S. government recently passed the Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022. This act allows veterans, their family members, and civilians who were exposed to the toxic drinking water at Camp Lejeune from 1953 to 1987 to seek compensation for the injuries and damages caused by their Camp Lejeune exposure. Marines, civil employees, and their families are entitled to seek compensation under this Act.
